Class 4: Liner Notes

In class 4, we will do our in class writing, peer review on the cover songs assignment, and we will talk about liner notes. What should be included in good liner notes? What information is interesting to read about? Do liner notes need to be relevant to the music/artist?

Homework: Compile a 5 Song EP, and write liner notes for it. Please post your work to the blog by Tuesday (Feb. 5) at 9am. Re-write of cover songs assignment due at next class (Feb. 6).

Instead of listening to The Strokes, You should listen to this.

Preamble:

Sure The Strokes are great, but not that great, and as New York bands go, not even near the best. Trust me, I’m from Seattle, I know what I’m talking about. Granted I’ve only been to New York once, but that’s not the point. The point is that The Strokes are an extremely easy target and I happen to have a few darts. So put this convenient little EP on, sit back, relax and let the sounds of five bands that are better than The Strokes wash over your brain.

1. “I Would Never Want to Be Young Again” by Gogol Bordello. 3:46
From Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike (2005)
Eugene Hutz – vocals, guitar, fire buckets, body percussion
Sergey Ryabtsev – violin, vocals
Yuri Lemeshev – accordion, vocals
Oren Kaplan – guitar, vocals
Rea Mochiach – bass, percussion, electronics, programming, vocals
Eliot Ferguson – drums, vocals
Pamela Jintana Racine – percussion, vocals
Elizabeth Sun – percussion, vocals

2. “Hold Hands and It Will Happen Anyway” by Liars. 4:52
From They Were Wrong, So We Drowned (2004)
Angus Andrew – various, vocals
Aaron Hemphill – various, vocals
Julian Gross – various, vocals

3. “Staring At the Sun” by TV on the Radio. 3:28
From Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes (2004)
Tunde Adebimpe – vocals, loops
Kyp Malone – vocals, guitars, loops
David Andrew Sitek – guitars, keys, loops

4. “Pink Steam” by Sonic Youth. 6:58
From Rather Ripped (2006)
Kim Gordon – bass, guitars
Thurston Moore – guitars, vocals
Lee Ranaldo – guitars
Steve Shelley – drums

5. “Y Control” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs 4:00
From Fever to Tell (2003)
Brian Chase – drums
Nick Zinner – guitars
Karen O – vocals

1. Gogol Bordello is what happens when you mix Folk music from around the world with the volatile Punk Rock of New York. Led by madman/firebucketeer Eugene Hutz, this band will toss you to the floor and leave you screaming for more. I chose this song because it gives a perfect example of the high energy and genre-warping sound of the band.

2. Liars are a difficult band to pigeonhole, and they like it that way. They sound like a tribal noise experiment gone wrong in the best way possible, as the overwhelming feeling of dread is palpable. They have since re-located to Berlin. I chose this song because it had the most identifiable song structure from the album.

3. “TV on the Radio” is a group of Indie Rockers who favor electronic sound walls that would send Phil Spector running for the nearest exit. Pay special attention to the Vocal harmonies. I chose this song because it’s one of my favorites and has some of the best vocal work from the album.

4. One of the few bands to come out of the No Wave scene intact, the spiritual godfathers/mother of Grunge and Riot Grrrl, feedback… feedback… beautiful guitar solo… feedback… Sonic Youth may not be so youthful anymore but the brilliance and talent is as strong as ever. I chose this song because of it’s being an excellent example of the bands sound, with emphasis on the guitars.

5. Bass player? We don’t need no bass player! The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are a powerhouse indie rock trio. Caterwauling guitars, superb drumming and Karen O’s gorgeous vocals, this band is the sound of raw energy crackling. This song was included because it’s one of my favorites from the album, particularly because of the guitar and vocal work.

Mix Album
1.2Pac"Dear Mama”
When I was young me and my mama had beef
Seventeen years old kicked out on the streets
Though back at the time, I never thought I'd see her face
Ain't a woman alive that could take my mama's place
Suspended from school; and scared to go home, I was a fool
with the big boys, breakin all the rules
I shed tears with my baby sister
Over the years we was poorer than the other little kids
And even though we had different daddy's, the same drama
When things went wrong we'd blame mama
I reminice on the stress I caused, it was hell
Huggin on my mama from a jail cell
And who'd think in elementary?
Heeey! I see the penitentiary, one day
And runnin from the police, that's right
Mama catch me, put a whoopin to my backside
And even as a crack fiend, mama
You always was a black queen, mama
I finally understand
for a woman it ain't easy tryin to raise a man
You always was committed
A poor single mother on welfare, tell me how ya did it
There's no way I can pay you back
But the plan is to show you that I understand
You are appreciated

[Chorus: Reggie Green & "Sweet Franklin" w/ 2Pac]

Lady...
Don't cha know we love ya? Sweet lady
Dear mama
Place no one above ya, sweet lady
You are appreciated
Don't cha know we love ya?

[second and third chorus, "And dear mama" instead of "Dear mama"]

[Verse Two: 2Pac]

Now ain't nobody tell us it was fair
No love from my daddy cause the coward wasn't there
He passed away and I didn't cry, cause my anger
wouldn't let me feel for a stranger
They say I'm wrong and I'm heartless, but all along
I was lookin for a father he was gone
I hung around with the Thugs, and even though they sold drugs
They showed a young brother love
I moved out and started really hangin
I needed money of my own so I started slangin
I ain't guilty cause, even though I sell rocks
It feels good puttin money in your mailbox
I love payin rent when the rent's due
I hope ya got the diamond necklace that I sent to you
Cause when I was low you was there for me
And never left me alone because you cared for me
And I could see you comin home after work late
You're in the kitchen tryin to fix us a hot plate
Ya just workin with the scraps you was given
And mama made miracles every Thanksgivin
But now the road got rough, you're alone
You're tryin to raise two bad kids on your own
And there's no way I can pay you back
But my plan is to show you that I understand
You are appreciated

[Chorus]

[Verse Three: 2Pac]

Pour out some liquor and I reminsce, cause through the drama
I can always depend on my mama
And when it seems that I'm hopeless
You say the words that can get me back in focus
When I was sick as a little kid
To keep me happy there's no limit to the things you did
And all my childhood memories
Are full of all the sweet things you did for me
And even though I act craaazy
I gotta thank the Lord that you made me
There are no words that can express how I feel
You never kept a secret, always stayed real
And I appreciate, how you raised me
And all the extra love that you gave me
I wish I could take the pain away
If you can make it through the night there's a brighter day
Everything will be alright if ya hold on
It's a struggle everyday, gotta roll on
And there's no way I can pay you back
But my plan is to show you that I understand
You are appreciated

[Chorus]

Sweet lady
And dear mama

2. 2Pac “Baby don’t cry-Keep ya head up 2”
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {Outlawz}
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {Keep ya head up}

[2Pac]
Now here's a story bout a woman with dreams
So picture perfect at thirteen, an ebony queen
Beneath the surface it was more than just a crooked smile
Nobody knew about her secret so it took a while
I could see a tear fall slow down her black cheek
Sheddin quiet tears in the back seat; so when she asked me,
"What would you do if it was you?"

Couldn't answer such a horrible pain to live through
I tried to trade places in the tragedy
I couldn't picture three crazed ni**az grabbin me
For just a moment I was trapped in the pain, Lord come and take me
Four ni**az violated, they chased and they raped me
Even though it wasn't me, I could feel the grief
Thinkin with your brains blown that would make the pain go
No! You got to find a way to survive
cause they win when your soul dies

[2Pac + H.E.A.T.]
Baby please don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {never give up}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {never give up}
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry

[Edi Amin]
Uhh
Forget him girl (forget him girl) he ain't gon' never change
ain't no hater but that ni**a lost in the game
After the bright lights and big thangs
he probably could loev you, but he in love with the struggle
Everyday, his mind on gettin mo' (gettin mo')
and never your feelings, he's chasin millions fo' sho'
Uh oh (uh oh), now you bout to have his baby? (dayamn)
Another wild-a*s ni**a that's gon' drive you crazy
You got too much, mo', livin to do - I'm spittin this to you,
cause you deserve more than what he givin to you (that's right)
Beautiful, black, precious, and complicated
A new millennium dime piece, so fine she
got em all stuck standin still when she come through
Baby take a little mo' time, love'll find you
And show us the sky's blue somebody other than me
gon' give you everything you need, feel me?
{Don't cry-ahhhhh..}

[2Pac + H.E.A.T.]
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {you'll be alright}
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {you'll be alright}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {keep your head up}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {never give up}
Even when the road is hard, never give up {no no.. ohhhh}
Baby don't cry

[Young Noble]
I'm tryin to do all that I can, from jump
Now you losin, you was choosin the wrong man
Dealt the wrong hand, you was young and beautiful
Lost and turned out, what you let that ni**a do to you? (Damn)
I knew her since elementary, she blew a kiss to me
Wrote me a note in crayon, wantin to get with me
We was kids, now she got three kids
They see their father e'ryday, and they don't know who he is
Seen him last night, homey roll a E-cla*s
Mad cheese in the stash, still a deadbeat dad
I bring her, Pampers and food, just to stop through
but those, ain't my seeds, nuttin really I could do (nah)
I feel pity for you, you ain't even his wife
Seventeen with three kids, locked down for life
Shoulda chose me, she bout to O.D. from the pressure
Hell nah I won't let her {BABY DON'T CRY}

[2Pac + H.E.A.T.]
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {you'll be alright}
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {baby don't cry}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {baby baby baby}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {no..}
Even when the road is hard, never give up {no-ohhhh}
Baby don't cry, I gotta keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {ooooh baby}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {keep your head up}
{keep your head up, never give up}
Even when the road is hard, never give up, baby don't cry

[Young Noble]
Uhh, uhh, yeah, don't give up {you'll be alright}
Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry

[2Pac + H.E.A.T.]
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up, baby don't cry

[Edi Amin]
For all the ladies {Soulshock, Karlin}
Baby don't cry

3. Lupe Fiasco “Daydreamin”
Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

[Lupe Fiasco]
As I spy from behind my giant robot's eyes
I keep him happy 'cause I might fall out if he cries
Scared of heights so I might pass out if he flies
Keep him on autopilot 'cause I can't drive
Room enough for one I tell my homies they can't ride
Unless they sittin on the shoulders but that's way too high
Let's try not to step on the children
The news cameras filmin
This walkin project buildin
Now there's hoes sellin hoes like right around the toes
And the crackheads beg at about the lower leg
There's crooked police that's stationed at the knees
And they do drive-bys like up and down the thighs
And there's a car chase goin on at the waist
Keep a vest on my chest
I'm sittin in my room as I'm lookin out the face
Somethin to write about
I still got some damage from fightin the whitehouse, just a

Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

[Lupe Fiasco]
Now come on everybody, let's make cocaine cool
We need a few more half naked women up in the pool
And hold this MAC-10 that's all covered in jewels
And can you please put your titties closer to the 22s?
And where's the champagne? We need champagne
Now look as hard as you can with this blunt in your hand
And now hold up your chain slow motion through the flames
Now cue the smoke machines and the simulated rain
But not too loud 'cause the baby's sleepin
I wonder if it knows what the world is keepin
Up both sleeves while he lay there dreamin
Me and my robot tip-toe 'round creepin
I had to turn my back on what got you paid
I couldn't see half the hood on me like Abu Ghraib
But I'd like to thank the streets that drove me crazy
And all the televisions out there that raised me, I was

Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

4. Lupe Fiasco “Intruder Alert”
She said that there was no love in her heart
Cuz one day a rapist attacked her and broke
That all apart
She said there was no way to fix it
Or to cover her scars
Then one day a guy came along that
Probly could help her start
He was sincere made her believe it was safe
For her to trust again
Before long she was cool to givin hugs to him
Knew that it was right cuz somethin was wrong
The alarms in her mind didnt tell her he didnt belong

There was no

[Chorus:]
Intruder [x4]
Alert [x4]

He said nobody else ever loved em (him)
Thats why he get high enough to go touch the heavens above em
Vividly remembers every pipe
Every needle that stuck em
Every alley he ever slept in
Every purse that he snuck in
Every level of hell he's been to
And the one that he's stuck in
The one he cant escape
Even tho it's of his own construction
Maybe you can relate
Maybe you one of those that just doesnt
Maybe he doesnt care
Loves to allow these demons to come in
With no

[Chorus:]
Intruder [x4]
Alert [x4]

Famine stricken his home
Land and no social standing
In the economic pecking order
Emergency relief
Distribution systems is in disorder
He's checking water making sure
It's safe enough for his
Daughter to float across in
The boat he built
Hopefully strong enough to support
Prayin border patrols
Don't catch her
And process and deport her
Before she reach the shore
Of the land of the free
Where they feed u
Treat u like equals
Decieve you
Stamp u
And call you illegal

[Chorus:]
Intruder [x4]
Alert [x4]

Singin'

Is someone here
And it's not me
How could this be
I have my source
And my army is on my (something)
Don't know this line

I'm so full of (SOMETHING)
I built my wall so high
SOOOOOO WHYYYYYYY OOOO'
YYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Intruder [repeat]

[ends song with repeated intruder

5. "Hurt Me Soul"
Now I ain't tryna be the greatest
I used to hate hip-hop... yup, because the women degraded
But Too $hort made me laugh, like a hypocrite I played it
A hypocrite I stated, though I only recited half
Omittin the word "bitch," cursin I wouldn't say it
Me and dog couldn't relate, til a bitch I dated
Forgive my favorite word for hers and hers alike
But I learnt it from a song I heard and sorta liked
Yeah, for the icin, glamorized drug dealin was appealin
But the block club kept it from in front of our buildin
Gangsta rap-based filmings became the buildin blocks
For children with leakin ceilings catchin drippins with pots
Coupled with compositions from Pac, Nas's "It Was Written"
In the mix with my realities and feelings
Living conditions, religion, ignorant wisdom and artistic vision
I began to jot, tap the world and listen, it drop

My mom can't feed me, my boyfriend beats me
I have sex for money, the hood don't love me
The cops wanna kill me, this nonsense built me
And I got noooo place to gooo
They bomb my village, they call us killers
Took me off they welfare, can't afford they health care
My teacher won't teach me, my master beats me
And it huuurts meee soooul

I had a ghetto boy bop, a Jay-Z boycott
'Cause he said that he never prayed to God, he prayed to Gotti
I'm thinkin godly, God guard me from the ungodly
But by my 30th watchin of "Streets is Watchin"
I was back to givin props again and that was botherin
By this uncomfortable as a untouchable touchin you
The theme songs that niggas hustle to seem wrong but these songs was comin true
And it was all becoming cool
I found a condom on the ground that Johns would cum into and thought
What constitutes a prostitute is the pursuit of profit then they drop it
The homie in a suit pat her on the butt, then rock it
It seems I was seein the same scene adopted
Prevalent in different things with the witnesses indifferent to stop it
They said don't knock it, mind ya business
His business isn't mine and that nigga pimpin got it

They took my daughter, we ain't got no water
I can't get hired, they cross on fire
We all got suspended, I just got sentenced
So I got noooo place to gooo
They threw down my gang sign, I ain't got no hang time
They talk about my sneakers, poisoned our leader
My father ain't seen me, turn off my TV
'Cause it huuurts meee soooul

So through the Grim Reaper sickle sharpening
Macintosh marketing
Oil field augering
Brazilian adolescent disarmament
Israeli occupation
Islamic martyrdom, precise
Yeah, laser guided targeting
Oil for food, water, and terrorist organization harborin
Sand camouflage army men
CCF sponsorin, world conquerin, telephone monitorin
Louis Vuitton modelin, pornographic actress honorin
String theory ponderin, bullimic vomitin
Catholic priest fondlin, pre-emptive bombin and Osama and no bombin them
They breakin in my car again, deforestation and overloggin and
Hennessy and Hypnotic swallowin, hydroponic coughin and
All the world's ills, sittin on chrome 24-inch wheels, like that

They say I'm infected, this is why I injected
I had it aborted, we got deported
My laptop got spyware, they say that I can't lie here
But I got noooo place to gooo
I can't stop eatin, my best friend's leavin
My pastor touched me, I love this country
I lost my earpiece, I hope y'all hear me
'Cause it huuurts meee soooul

1. Lake on Ice

Life is like a lake on ice
Things we need are rarely
The way we want them

Life is like a lake on ice
Life is like a lake on ice
Life is like a lake on ice

Life is like a sparkling pot of joy
So use your time wisely
Before it’s gone

Life is like a lake on ice
Life is like a lake on ice
Life is like a lake on ice

Seek the truth, quit the lies
You have changed so much

Life is like a sparkling pot of joy
So use your time wisely
Before it’s gone

Miles Fann ©2007

2. Anything You Need

Sunday morning it’s time to start your day
Things we need to do involves a lot of work
Anything you need is always right in front of you

Nothings needed
Nothings needed
Nothings needed
Nothings needed

You need your car
You need your work
You always need something

Nothings needed
Nothings needed
Nothings needed
Nothings needed

When you walk it hurts really badly
Your eyes water all day nobody knows why
All the time you need is right there in front of you
Then you look to the side thump you pass out

(Instruments only)

I don’t know what to do
We have known each other forever
All I can say is good bye

(Lead Guitar only)

Nothings needed
Nothings needed
Nothings needed
Nothings needed
I say good bye
I say good bye

(Guitars fading)

3. Tell the Truth

What is the truth
Is life the truth
Tell what we are suppose to do
Is life real or is it fake

Tell the truth
Be real honest
Tell the truth
Please please why are we here

The truth is kept secret
Ask you're self
What are you here for
Take a minute

Tell the truth
Be real honest
Tell the truth
Please please why are we here

Truth truth
Just tell the truth
It's not that hard
It is a little frightening

You can do it
Stop lying
Just tell the truth
Just tell the truth
Truth truth truth truth

4. SAYING GOODBYE

When you just get to meet people
That you really come to like
Everything is just how you want it
Suddenly you have to leave

Make up your mind
Get on going
Make up your mind
It’s time to go

It’s been fun
We had one
Fun time

Make up your mind
Get on going
Make up your mind
It’s time to go

I wish I could stay
But I really gotta go go go
I’m sorry I have to leave so sudden
I wish I could stay
But I really gotta go go gooooooo

Miles Fann ©2007

5. River Of Sadness

It’s never enough to say it
You have to go and pay it
You always get in trouble for nonsense
I don’t mean to be on the offense

Sadness is here to stay
We all need a little time to our selves
Sadness never is enough
Just sit back and relax

Either way
Sadness is here to stay
Just take a break
I don’t mean to be on the offense
It was all a mistake
Now is not the time to be tense

Take your time
Don’t rush
Have some fun

Sadness is here to stay
We all need a little time to our selves
Sadness never is enough
Just sit back and relax

And now it’s all gone

"Roses"

[Verse 1]

[Kanye West]
I know it's past visiting hours
But can I please give her these flowers
The doctor dont wanna take procedures
He claim my heart can't take the anastesia
It'll send her body into a seizure
The little thing by the hospital bed, it'll stop beeping,
Hey chick, im at a lost for words
What do you say at this time?
Remember when I was nine?
Tell her everything gone be fine?
But i'd be lying, the family crying
They want her to live, and she trying
I'm argueing like what kind of doctor can we fly in
You know the best medicine go to people thats paid,
If Magic Johnson got a cure for A.I.D.S.
And all the broke muthafuckers past away
You tellin me if my grandma was in the N.B.A.
Right now she'd be ok?
But since she was just a secretary
Working for the church
For thirty five years
Things sposed to stop right here
My grandfather tryin to pull it together, he's strong,
Thats where I get my confidence from
I asked the nurse "did you do the research?"
She ask me, "can you sign some t-shirts?"
Bitch is you smokin reefer?
You dont see that we hurt
But still...

[Chorus]

...I smile
When roses come to see me
And I can't wait for a sunny day
(Im seeing it through your eyes)
Can't wait for the clouds to break

[Verse 2]

[Kanye West]
They outside of the emergency room, room
You can feel my heart beat, beat, beat
If she gone pull through
We gone find out soon
But right now she sleep, sleep, sleep
My mama say, they say she could pass away any day
Hey chick what these doctors know anyway
Let me see the X-rays
I ain't no expert, I'm just hurt
Cousin Kim took off for work
Plus my Aunt Shirley, Aunt Beverly, Aunt Claire and Aunt Jean
So many Aunties, we could have an Auntie team
Feel like Amerie "Its this one thing"
When they said that she made it
You see the eyes gleam
I think we at an all time high
To get there we run, we fly, we drive
Coz with my family we know where home is
So instead of sending flowers
We the roses...

[Chorus]

I smile
When roses come to see me
And I can't wait for a sunny day
(Im seeing it through your eyes)
Can't wait for the clouds to break

Who brings the sunshine?

Ohhhhh I smile
When roses come to see me
And I can't wait for a sunny day
(Im seeing it through your eyes)
Can't wait for the clouds to breaK

[Verse 1]
Now little lisa is only 9 years old
Shes tryin to figure out why the world is so cold
Why shes all all alone and they never met her family
Mamas always gone and she never met her daddy
Part of her is missin and nobody will listenin
Mama is on drugs gettin high up in the kitchen
Bringin home men at different hours of the night
Startin with laughs--usually endin in a fight
Sneak into her room while her mamas knocked out
Tryin to have his way and little lisa says 'ouch'
She tries to resist but then all he does is beat her
Tries to tell her mom but her mama don't believe her
Lisa is stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothin else to do but some get some clothes and pack
She says shes bout to run away and never come back.

Why shes not pretty and nobody seems to like her
Alcoholic step dad always wanna strike her
[ Runaway Love lyrics found on http://www.completealbumlyrics.com ]
Yells and abuses, leaves her with some bruises
Teachers ask questions she makin up excuses
Bleedin on the inside, cryin on the out
Its only one girl really knows what she about
Her name is lil stacy and they become friends
Promise that they always be tight til the end
Until one day lil stacy gets shot
A drive by bullet went stray up on her block
Now nicole stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothin else to do but some get some clothes and pack
She says shes bout to run away and never come back.

[Hook]
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love
Runaway love

[Verse 3]
Little erica is eleven years old
Shes steady tryin to figure why the world is so cold
So she pops x to get rid of all the pain
Cause shes havin sex with a boy whos sixteen
Emotions run deep and she thinks shes in love
So theres no protection hes usin no glove
Never thinkin bout the consequences of her actions
Livin for today and not tomorrows satisfaction
The days go by and her belly gets big
The father bails out he aint ready for a kid
Knowin her mama will blow it all outta proportion
Plus she lives poor so no money for abortion
Erica is stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothin else to do but get her clothes and pack
She say shes about to run away and never come back.

[Hook]
Runaway love [repeats til end]

3. Biz Markie
"Just a Friend"

Have you ever met a girl that you tried to date
But a year to make love she wanted you to wait
Let me tell ya a story of my situation
I was talkin to this girl from the u.s. nation
The way that I met her was on tour at a concert
She had long hair and a short miniskirt
I just got onstage drippin, pourin with sweat
I was walkin through the crowd and gues who I met
I whispered in her ear, come to the picture booth
So I can ask you some questions to see if you are a hundred proof
I asked her her name, she said blah-blah-blah
She had 9/10 pants and a very big bra
I took a couple of flicks and she was enthused
I said, how do you like the show?
She said, I was very amused
I started throwin bass, she started throwin back mid-range
But when I sprung the question, she acted kind of strange
Then when I asked, do ya have a man, she tried to pretend
She said, no I dont, I only have a friend
Come on, Im not even goin for it
This is what Im goin sing

You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend
And you say hes just a friend, oh baby
You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend
But you say hes just a friend, oh baby
You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend
But you say hes just a friend

So I took blah-blahs word for it at this time
I thought just havin a friend couldnt be no crime
cause I have friends and thats a fact
Like agnes, agatha, germaine, and jacq
Forget about that, lets go into the story
About a girl named blah-blah-blah that adored me
So we started talkin, getttin familiar
Spendin a lot of time so we can build up
A relationship or some undderstanding
How its gonna be in the future we was plannin
Everything sounded so dandy and sweet
I had no idea I was in for a treat
After this was established, everything was cool
The tour was over and she went back to school
I called every day to see how she was doin
Everytime that I ccalled her it seemed somethin was brewin
I called her on my dime, picked up, and then I called again
I said, yo, who was that? oh, hes just a friend
Dont gimme that, dont ever gimme that
Jus bust this

You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend
And you say hes just a friend, oh baby
You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend
But you say hes just a friend, oh baby
You, you got what I need but you say hes just a friend
But you say hes just a friend

So I came to her college on a surprise visit
To see my girl that was so exquisite
It was a school day, I knew she was there
The first semester of the school year
I went to a gate to ask where was her dorm
This guy made me fill out a visitors form
He told me where it was and I as on my way
To see my baby doll, I was happy to say
I arrrived in front of the dormitory
Yo, could you tell me where is door three?
They showed me where it was for the moment
I didnt know I was in for such an event
So I came to her room and opened the door
Oh, snap! guess what I saw?
A fella tongue-kissin my girl in the mouth,
I was so in shock my heart went down south
So please listen to the message that I say
Dont ever talk to a girl who says she just has a friend

"I'll Be Missing You"

Every day I wake up
I hope Im dreamin
I cant believe this shit
Cant believe you aint here
Sometimes its just hard for a nigga to wake up
Its hard to just keep goin
Its like I feel empty inside without you bein here
I would do anything man, to bring you back
Id give all this shit, shit the whole knot
I saw your son today
He look just like you
You was the greatest
Youll always be the greatest
I miss you big
Cant wait til that day, when I see your face again
I cant wait til that day, when I see your face again...

Yeah... this right here (tell me why)
Goes out, to everyone, that has lost someone
That they truly loved (cmon, check it out)

Verse one: puff daddy

Seems like yesterday we used to rock the show
I laced the track, you locked the flow
So far from hangin on the block for dough
Notorious, they got to know that
Life aint always what it seem to be (uh-uh)
Words cant express what you mean to me
Even though youre gone, we still a team
Through your family, Ill fulfill your dream (thats right)
In the future, cant wait to see
If you open up the gates for me
Reminisce some time, the night they took my friend (uh-huh)
Try to black it out, but it plays again
When its real, feelings hard to conceal
Cant imagine all the pain I feel
Give anything to hear half your breath (half your breath)
I know you still living your life, after death

Chorus: faith evans

Every step I take, every move I make
Every single day, every time I pray
Ill be missing you
Thinkin of the day, when you went away
What a life to take, what a bond to break
Ill be missing you

[puff] I miss you big

Verse two: puff daddy

Its kinda hard with you not around (yeah)
Know you in heaven smilin down (eheh)
Watchin us while we pray for you
Every day we pray for you
Til the day we meet again
In my heart is where Ill keep you friend
Memories give me the strength I need (uh-huh) to proceed
Strength I need to believe
My thoughts big I just cant define (cant define)
Wish I could turn back the hands of time
Us in the 6, shop for new clothes and kicks
You and me taking flicks
Makin hits, stages they receive you on
I still cant believe youre gone (cant believe youre gone)
Give anything to hear half your breath (half your breath)
I know you still living youre life, after death

Chorus

[faith evans] somebody tell me why

Interlude: faith evans

On that morning
When this life is over
I know
Ill see your face

Outro: 112

Every night I pray, every step I take
Every move I make, every single day
Every night I pray, every step I take
[puff] every day that passes
Every move I make, every single day
[puff] is a day that I get closer
[puff] to seeing you again
Every night I pray, every step I take
[puff] we miss you big... and we wont stop
Every move I make, every single day
[puff] cause we cant stop... thats right
Every night I pray, every step I take
Every move I make, every single day
[puff] we miss you big

"Fallin"

I keep on fallin'
In and out of love
With you
Sometimes I love ya
Sometimes u make me blue
Sometimes I feel good
At times I feel used
Lovin you darlin'
Makes me so confused

I keep on
Fallin'
In and out of love with you
I never loved someone
The way that I love you

Verse 2
Oh, oh , I never felt this way
How do you give me so much pleasure
And cause me so much pain
Just when I think
I've taken more than would a fool
I start fallin' back in love with you

I keep on
Fallin'
In and out of love with you
I never loved someone
The way that I love you

Bridge
Oh baby
I, I, I, I'm fallin'
I, I, I, I'm fallin'
Fall

I keep on
Fallin'
In and out of love with you
I never loved someone
The way that I love you

I'm fallin'
In and out of love with you
I never loved someone
The way that I love you

I'm fallin'
In and out of love with you
I never loved someone
The way that I love you

A Tiny Slice of the Soundtrack to Josie's Childhood

My musical taste in my young years was thankfully steered away (for the most part) from the boy bands and assorted teenyboppers that dominated the small CD collections of my friends and peers in the 90's. This was due in large part to my brother being old enough at that point to be aware of more "alternative" and other kinds of music, so I was exposed to more than Britney Spears and N*Sync. So, here's an EP full of 90's nostalgia! Who could ever want anything else!?

"Tubthumping"
Chumbawamba
Tubthumper (1997)

Nothing like a good old brit-pop hit to start the whole thing off. I found this to be a good song when it was all over the radio for me to yell the chorus of at people: "I get knocked down, but I get up again/You're never gonna keep me down!" Probably the most annoying song on this EP and one of the most annoying of my childhood, although I loved it at 6.

"Inside Out"
Eve 6
Eve 6 (1998)

Hurrah for radio friendly catchy pop-punk! I distinctly remember being fond of this songs lyrics because the words "ginger ale" appear in them (I loved that stuff!). Another song on the album, "Superhero Girl" turned me into a super badass in the eyes of my friends when I played it when some of my first grade peers were at my house and they freaked out because it has the word "fuck" in it. It was awesome! I felt like a god, and thus began my swearing habit. For this reason I almost put this song on the EP, but decided on the hit single instead.

"Dune Buggy"
The Presidents of the United States of America
The Presidents of the United States of America (1995)

You've probably heard me say this before and you'll probably hear me say it again: PUSA is THE band of my childhood. They were my very first show, and provided much of the soundtrack to my life in the mid-nineties. I particularly remember having arguments with my brother while this song was being played. It would also run trough my head as I looked at his Spiderman comics because I would be reminded of it by the spider character driving around in his dune buggy and of "Spiderwoman in the front seat screamin' 'Go Go Go'"

"Sex and Candy"
Marcy Playground
Marcy Playground (1997)

Okay, okay, this is the last one hit wonder I've got on here. I don't have much to say about this one, aside from vividly remembering humming it to myself all the time on cloudy days and wondering what the hell "disco lemonade" is. "Poppies" was the other song on the album I considered, in which I innocently thought they were simply talking about flowers (I eventually got the drug reference). In the end I decided on "Sex and Candy" because I figured people would be more familiar with it.

"Sheep Go to Heaven"
Cake
Prolonging the Magic (1998)

Again, a song that made my friends think I was a total badass for singing swear words, however mild. It was another one of my favorite songs to sing the chorus of all over the place because the lyrics were easy to remember ("sheep go to heaven, goats go to hell"-- that's it) and it lent itself well to the obnoxious yelling kind of singing that little kids are good at.

1.2Pac"Dear Mama”
What I always seem to picture in my head when I listen to this song is the streets of Los Angeles. I’m not so sure why but the beat of this song reminds me of a person walking threw old streets he/she used to play on and remembering “the old days” and I really picture that in Los Angeles. 2pac did grow up in Los Angeles. The sense of this song is very sad and sweet at the same time. 2Pac gives thanks to his mother and lets her know that he knew life was hard for her. 2pac lyrics are very strong and respectful.

Lyrics:

2. 2Pac “Baby don’t cry-Keep ya head up 2”
Sometimes when I’m feeling horrible I look for this song and play it over and over. I always feel so much better in the end. This song can easily lift you up during bad times. Because of 2pacs strong and honest lyrics again this song became so successful. I remember the 1st time I heard this song I couldn’t believe a man would be singing things woman deal with everyday because I thought a woman would understand. The beat to this song is very “old school”
and original.

Lyrics:

Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {Outlawz}
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {Keep ya head up}

Baby please don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {never give up}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {never give up}
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry

[Edi Amin]
Uhh
Forget him girl (forget him girl) he ain't gon' never change
ain't no hater but that ni**a lost in the game
After the bright lights and big thangs
he probably could love you, but he in love with the struggle
{Don't cry-ahhhhh..}

[2Pac + H.E.A.T.]
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {you'll be alright}
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {you'll be alright}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {keep your head up}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {never give up}
Even when the road is hard, never give up {no no.. ohhhh}

Hell nah I won't let her {BABY DON'T CRY}

[2Pac + H.E.A.T.]
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {you'll be alright}
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {baby don't cry}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {baby baby baby}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {no..}
Even when the road is hard, never give up {no-ohhhh}
Baby don't cry, I gotta keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, you got to keep your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up {ooooh baby}
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up {keep your head up}
{keep your head up, never give up}
Even when the road is hard, never give up, baby don't cry

[Young Noble]
Uhh, uhh, yeah, don't give up {you'll be alright}
Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry

[2Pac + H.E.A.T.]
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up
Baby don't cry, I hope you got your head up
Even when the road is hard, never give up, baby don't cry

[Edi Amin]
For all the ladies {Soulshock, Karlin}
Baby don't cry

3. Lupe Fiasco ft. Jill Scott “Daydreamin”

Without Jill Scott, this song would be deffinatley be missing something. Scott with her troumendous talent very well completes this song. With the Background music having a sort of 70’s feel to it her voice fits “daydreamin” even better. I think one of the best things about this song is that the music really fits to what they are singing about. I can always picture what they are singing about and perfectly.

Lyrics:
Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

[Lupe Fiasco]
As I spy from behind my giant robot's eyes
I keep him happy 'cause I might fall out if he cries
Scared of heights so I might pass out if he flies
Keep him on autopilot 'cause I can't drive
Room enough for one I tell my homies they can't ride
Unless they sittin on the shoulders but that's way too high
Let's try not to step on the children
The news cameras filmin
This walkin project buildin
Now there's hoes sellin hoes like right around the toes
And the crackheads beg at about the lower leg
There's crooked police that's stationed at the knees
And they do drive-bys like up and down the thighs
And there's a car chase goin on at the waist
Keep a vest on my chest
I'm sittin in my room as I'm lookin out the face
Somethin to write about
I still got some damage from fightin the whitehouse, just a

Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

[Lupe Fiasco]
Now come on everybody, let's make cocaine cool
We need a few more half naked women up in the pool
And hold this MAC-10 that's all covered in jewels
And can you please put your titties closer to the 22s?
And where's the champagne? We need champagne
Now look as hard as you can with this blunt in your hand
And now hold up your chain slow motion through the flames
Now cue the smoke machines and the simulated rain
But not too loud 'cause the baby's sleepin
I wonder if it knows what the world is keepin
Up both sleeves while he lay there dreamin
Me and my robot tip-toe 'round creepin
I had to turn my back on what got you paid
I couldn't see half the hood on me like Abu Ghraib
But I'd like to thank the streets that drove me crazy
And all the televisions out there that raised me, I was

Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

Daydream
I fell asleep beneath the flowers
For a couple of hours
On a beautiful day
Daydream
I dream of you amid the flowers
For a couple of hours
Such a beautiful day

4. Lupe Fiasco “Intruder Alert” the girl that is singing in the background of this song is never addressed to who she is. But her voice is a great addition to the song. This song leaves you with a sad feeling but its good at the same time.

Lyrics:
The piano in this song is my absolute favorite thing about this song. The keys that are played are so simple but affect the song so much. Also with the piano keys that are played fits the topic of the song very well.

She said that there was no love in her heart
Cuz one day a rapist attacked her and broke
That all apart
She said there was no way to fix it
Or to cover her scars
Then one day a guy came along that
Probly could help her start
He was sincere made her believe it was safe
For her to trust again
Before long she was cool to givin hugs to him
Knew that it was right cuz somethin was wrong
The alarms in her mind didnt tell her he didnt belong

There was no

[Chorus:]
Intruder [x4]
Alert [x4]

He said nobody else ever loved em (him)
Thats why he get high enough to go touch the heavens above em
Vividly remembers every pipe
Every needle that stuck em
Every alley he ever slept in
Every purse that he snuck in
Every level of hell he's been to
And the one that he's stuck in
The one he cant escape
Even tho it's of his own construction
Maybe you can relate
Maybe you one of those that just doesnt
Maybe he doesnt care
Loves to allow these demons to come in
With no

[Chorus:]
Intruder [x4]
Alert [x4]

Famine stricken his home
Land and no social standing
In the economic pecking order
Emergency relief
Distribution systems is in disorder
He's checking water making sure
It's safe enough for his
Daughter to float across in
The boat he built
Hopefully strong enough to support
Prayin border patrols
Don't catch her
And process and deport her
Before she reach the shore
Of the land of the free
Where they feed u
Treat u like equals
Decieve you
Stamp u
And call you illegal

[Chorus:]
Intruder [x4]
Alert [x4]

Singin'

Is someone here
And it's not me
How could this be
I have my source
And my army is on my (something)
Don't know this line

I'm so full of (SOMETHING)
I built my wall so high
SOOOOOO WHYYYYYYY OOOO'
YYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Intruder [repeat]

[ends song with repeated intruder

5. "Hurt Me Soul"
The chorus of this song is probably my favorite part about this song, Because it addresses real matters in life that aren’t talked about much. And the neat thing about the chorus is that each time the chorus is sung the lyrics change. This is another song that the music goes so well with what is being said.
